In the spring of 2025, Great Runs spent time researching what’s new to the running scene in some of the largest cities in Europe. The list below, in alphabetical order by city, includes brand new parks & paths, as well as major enhancements to existing running infrastructure. Athens, Greece. For our iconic ‘runseeing’ tour, Vassilissis Olgas Street, between Hadrian’s Arch and the Panathenaic Stadium is now a 700m pedestrian walkway. Also, keep an eye out for Hellinikon Metropolitan Park. The site of the former international airport is being transformed into a vast green space that, when completed in 2026, will be one of Europe’s largest urban parks.
Berlin, Germany. The Bullengraben is revitalized green corridor in Spandau that runs along a narrow canal for 4 km. Can combine with a 3 km path along the Havel River. There have also been several improvements & expansions to the parks & green space around the former Tempelhof Airport.
Genoa, Italy. Significant expansion and improvement of the Genoa waterfront promenade. It’s now possible to run for 5.5 km from the Porto Antico to Boccadasse. Includes the new Renzo Piano designed Waterfront di Levante urban park.
Istanbul, Turkey. Kemerburgaz Urban Forest (Kemerburgaz Kent Ormanı) is a new and wonderful recent addition to the running scene in Istanbul. Only a 20-minute drive from the city. There are marked running trails of 3.4k, 5k, & 10k. Good shade option on a hot day! There have also been some enhancements to Emirgan Park near İstinye.
London, UK. There are several new green spaces in the Canary Wharf area, plus designated 1k, 3k, & 5k routes that guide runners through over 100 public artworks. Also, in the Fulham Pier area in West London, a newly constructed riverwalk reconnects the path between Hammersmith and Putney Bridges.
Moscow, Russia. Major improvements to the area around Olympic Park area and Luzhniki Embankment on the north bank of the Moscow River. Also, significant enhancements to the paths in Yauza Park, a green corridor with 20 km of trails and several km of paved cycle paths along the Yauza River.
Paris, France. As part of our La Défense route, the Rose de Cherbourg is a newly inaugurated suspended urban promenade that runs for 1.3 km, bearing resemblance to New York City’s High Line.
Rome, Italy. Improvements to the multi-use path between Monte Ciocci and Monte Mario include a section connecting Monte Ciocci Park and the Roma San Pietro Railway Station. There have also been improvements to the Via Appia Antica historic road, including the park around it.
Vienna, Austria. In Seestadt Aspern — one of the largest ongoing urban development projects in Europe — there’s a pleasant loop around Aspern Lake, plus good opportunities to add on with pedestrian-friendly streets and cycle paths.
